1. Date: November 5, 2011 (Sat.); 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

2. Place: Fukuoka International University - Fukuoka Women's Jr. College library, 5th floor meeting room.

3. Theme: Students can choose from two different approaches. They can deliver a speech on the topic "A Movie That Inspired Me" or they can deliver a speech on another topic of their own choosing. Regardless of which topic they choose, they must

  • deliver a speech that is no longer than 4 minutes (about 350 to 400 words)
  • remember that the goal of a speech is communication with the audience.

Speech givers will lose points for just reading a speech or for giving a speech on a topic they clearly do not understand.

4. How to do well in the speech contest: Regardless of whether students choose to speak on the given topic ("A Movie That Inspired Me") or on a topic of their own choosing, they must follow the same 3-point development of the speech.

1. Introduce the topic.
Give details about the topic to help the audience have a clear idea of what the speech giver is talking about.
2. Tell why the topic is important.
Explain personal connections (either in reality or imagination) to the topic. Give details to make this clear.
3. Tell what personal impact the topic has/would have on the speaker, on the audience, or on other people.

If a student speaks on the specific topic "A Movie That Inspired Me," he or she should

(a) Introduce the topic.

  • What is the name of the movie?
  • Where and when does the movie take place?
  • Describe the main characters.
  • What is the movie about? (for example: What is the main problem/conflict? How do the characters try to resolve the problem/conflict?)

(b) Explain how the movie inspired you.

  • What did you learn from the movie?
  • How and why did you empathize with one or more characters?
  • Has your life changed as a result of watching the movie? If so, in what way?

(c) Explain why you would recommend this movie to other people.

5. Other: Students are encouraged to use visual aids or other props to increase the originality of their presentation. The judges will evaluate the speeches in the areas of pronunciation, originality, contents, presentation, and body language. After each speech, the facilitator will give some brief comments in Japanese. One judge will do the same in English.

In principle, we plan to hold this year's contest for high school students only. There will be a separate contest for our own university/junior college students. We can handle up to 16 speeches. There is no limit to the number of applicants, but during the final screening in September, we will accept no more than three students from any one school. For your reference, we are including downloadable video and text samples below. All are from students who participated in the 2010 speech contest. The audio quality is fine; the picture quality is a little off. We apologize for that, but hope you enjoy them.
