1. Date: November 6, 2010 (Sat.); 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

2. Place: Fukuoka International University - Fukuoka Women's Jr. College library, 5th floor meeting room.

3. Theme: This year students can choose from two different approaches. They can deliver a speech on the topic "A Country I'd like to Visit" or they can deliver a speech on another topic of their own choosing. Regardless of which topic they choose, they must

  • deliver a speech that is no longer than 4 minutes
  • remember that the goal of a speech is communication with the audience.

Speech givers will lose points for just reading a speech or for giving a speech on a topic they clearly do not understand.

4. How to do well in the speech contest: Regardless of whether a student chooses to speak on the given topic ("A Country I’d like to Visit") or on a topic of their own choosing, they must follow the same 3-point development of the speech.

1. Introduce the topic.
Give details about the topic to help the audience have a clear idea of what the speech giver is talking about.
2. Tell why the topic is important.
Explain personal connections (either in reality or imagination) to the topic. Give details to make this clear.
3. Tell what personal impact the topic has/would have on the speaker, on the audience, or on other people.

If a student speaks on the specific topic "A Country I’d like to Visit," they should

(a) Introduce the topic.

  • the name of the country
  • where the country is
  • what the country is famous for
  • characteristics of the country

(b) Tell why the country is important to them.

  • What do they already know about the country?
  • Why would they like to visit the country?
  • What do they expect or hope to see/do/eat/experience?
  • Do they have a special connection with that country?

(c) Tell what personal impact the topic has/would have on the speaker, on the audience, or on other people.

  • What do they expect to learn by visiting the country?
  • How would visiting that country affect them? How would it affect their future? How would it affect the people around them?

5. Other: Students are encouraged to use visual aids or other props to increase the originality of their presentation. The judges will evaluate the speeches in the areas of pronunciation, originality, contents, substance, presentation, and body language. After each speech, the facilitator will give some brief comments in Japanese. One judge will do the same in English.

We accept up to 15 speeches, about half in a high school category and half in a university/junior college category. For your reference, we are including downloadable video and text samples below. All are from our own Fukuoka International University or Fukuoka Women's Junior College students who participated in the 2009 speech contest. The theme was "A Song I Love." We hope you enjoy them.
